9 Days Lemosho Route with Crater Camp

Customize Your Adventure, Create Lifelong Memories

Tour Overview

For adventurous trekkers seeking one of the most exclusive and extraordinary experiences on Mount Kilimanjaro, the 9-Day Lemosho Route with Crater Camp offers an unforgettable journey to the Roof of Africa. Unlike standard Kilimanjaro climbs, this unique itinerary includes an overnight stay at Kilimanjaro Crater Camp, the highest campsite on the mountain at an elevation of 5,750 meters (18,865 feet) above sea level.

Located just one kilometer from Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), Crater Camp provides a rare opportunity to explore the summit area in daylight, witness the breathtaking beauty of the Northern Ice Fields, stand beside the famous Furtwangler Glacier, and visit the remarkable Reusch Crater and Ash Pit. Very few climbers ever experience these incredible features because most Kilimanjaro routes descend immediately after reaching the summit.

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the best routes on Kilimanjaro due to its excellent acclimatization profile, diverse scenery, and high summit success rate. Beginning on the mountain’s remote western side, the route traverses lush rainforests, expansive moorlands, alpine deserts, and the arctic summit zone before culminating in an extraordinary overnight stay at Crater Camp.

This expedition is recommended for trekkers with previous high-altitude experience or those comfortable with the challenges associated with sleeping at extreme elevations. The rewards, however, are unmatched: fewer crowds, spectacular glacier views, incredible photographic opportunities, and a truly immersive summit experience.

Tour Itinerary

After breakfast, depart from Moshi and drive to Londorossi Gate for registration formalities. Following park entry procedures, continue to the Lemosho trailhead where your trek begins.

Today's hike takes you through pristine rainforest filled with giant trees, colorful birdlife, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. The trail gradually ascends to Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp.

Elevation: 2,360m (7,742 ft) to 2,895m (9,498 ft)
Distance: 6 km (4 miles)
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Habitat: Rainforest

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs through heath and moorland zones characterized by giant heather and volcanic rock formations. As you ascend, spectacular views of the Shira Plateau begin to emerge.

Upon reaching Shira Ridge, you will enjoy your first panoramic views of Kibo Peak before descending slightly to Shira 1 Camp.

Elevation: 2,895m (9,498 ft) to 3,505m (11,500 ft)
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours
Habitat: Heath & Moorland

Today is dedicated to acclimatization as you cross the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world. The route offers magnificent views across Kilimanjaro's western slopes and neighboring Mount Meru.

Leaving the main trail, you head towards the remote Moir Hut area located beneath Lent Hills. Optional acclimatization hikes can be undertaken in the surrounding hills.

Elevation: 3,505m (11,500 ft) to 4,206m (13,800 ft)
Distance: 11 km (7 miles)
Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours
Habitat: Moorland

The trail gradually ascends toward the famous Lava Tower, a towering volcanic formation standing at 4,630 meters (15,190 feet). This section follows the important acclimatization principle of "climb high, sleep low."

After spending time at Lava Tower, descend through the fascinating Senecio Forest before reaching Barranco Camp beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.

Elevation: 4,206m (13,800 ft) to 4,630m (15,190 ft) then descend to 3,976m (13,044 ft)
Distance: 10 km (6 miles)
Hiking Time: 6–8 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall. Although steep in places, it is non-technical and offers spectacular views over the surrounding valleys.

After reaching the top, traverse several ridges and valleys before descending into Karanga Valley and climbing to Karanga Camp.

This shorter day allows your body additional time to acclimatize before higher elevations.

Elevation: 3,976m (13,044 ft) to 3,995m (13,106 ft)
Distance: 5 km (3 miles)
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Continue your ascent toward Barafu Camp, the traditional high camp for summit attempts. Along the way, enjoy incredible views of both Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks.

After arrival, rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit push.

Elevation: 3,995m (13,106 ft) to 4,673m (15,331 ft)
Distance: 4 km (2 miles)
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Shortly after midnight, begin your summit ascent under a star-filled sky. This is the most challenging section of the trek as you climb steep scree slopes toward Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak.

Standing at 5,895 meters, you have reached the highest point in Africa.

Unlike standard itineraries, your adventure continues as you descend slightly to Crater Camp where your mountain crew establishes camp. Spend the afternoon exploring the summit area, visiting the Furtwangler Glacier, or taking an optional hike to Reusch Crater and the Ash Pit.

Your guides will closely monitor your health throughout the night due to the extreme altitude.
