Recommended Best Time of Year to Climb Kilimanjaro
When is the Best Time of Year to Climb Kilimanjaro?
At Rosh Expeditions, we know that timing is one of the most important factors in ensuring a successful and memorable Kilimanjaro climb. While it is possible to trek Africa’s highest mountain at any time of year, the most favorable conditions are found during the dry seasons — January to early March and June to October. These months bring more stable weather, clear skies, and drier trails, giving trekkers the best chance of reaching Uhuru Peak safely while enjoying breathtaking summit views.
Kilimanjaro Climbing Dry Season Advantages
The dry months — from December to mid-March and mid-June to the end of October — typically offer bright sunshine, minimal rainfall, and comfortable trekking conditions. In January and February, you can expect clear mornings, moderate daytime temperatures, and occasional snow at higher elevations, which creates spectacular photo opportunities. These months strike a nice balance between favorable weather and fewer climbers compared to the busy mid-year season.
From June to October, conditions are cooler and the skies exceptionally clear, making this period the most popular time for Kilimanjaro climbs. Many adventurers also combine their trek with a Tanzania safari during this time, as it coincides with the Great Migration and prime wildlife viewing season.
Kilimanjaro Climbing Rainy Season Considerations
While Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, April to early May and November are the main rainy seasons. Trails can become muddy and slippery, visibility may be reduced, and summit conditions can be more challenging. However, the mountain is quieter, and experienced trekkers who don’t mind wet conditions may find these months appealing for the solitude they offer.
In the rainy periods, routes such as Rongai or Northern Circuit, which are more sheltered on the northern side, are recommended.
Month-by-Month Highlights
-
January to early March – Warm, mostly dry days with occasional snow above 4,200m; great for photography and fewer crowds than peak season.
-
March to May – Increasing rainfall from mid-March; avoid April for its heavy long rains unless you are experienced and prepared for muddy trails.
-
June to October – Cool, dry, and clear; busiest months with excellent summit success rates.
-
November – Short rains bring afternoon showers, but the northern routes remain relatively dry and quiet.
